The Valley of the Water Mills

Coming from Valle di Sotto one becomes aware immediately of an environmenta that has preserved more or less intact the elements of an ancient organization of the territory and its resources. After visiting the mill that has been restored and the forge, you continue towards a characteristic hamlet with the remains of a mill and a community bread oven. The saliso, an ancient path with stone paving bordered on either side by dry stone walls, starts from here. As you go up, you come to Rigine, a hamlet where there were once three mills and a barley mill. Today you can still see the mill for hulling barley and its external hydraulic box wheel. Going on up after Valle di Sopra, the home of the Sanguanelo, a mythical earth spirit, you come to Covolo. From there you can look across over the whole of the Valley of the Water Mills and up to the prominent geological relief of the “Sojo”.
